What’s in a Language?

Just like India is a Multilingual nation so is Germany. It is not a widely in the knowledge of the common the options and existence of other languages with German. Mainly for the reason that German, or the standard version of it, is spoken by around 95% of the population in Germany. There can be a slight dialectic variation in the German spoken but the point is that it is used as the first language. So what about these “Other Languages”? Would it be correct to call the ‘Languages of minority’? Languages in Germany have a more than interesting past so as to why they are spoken.

Speaking about Minority languages, there are few languages recognised in Germany as First languages for the minority. These are namely, languages called Sorbian, Romani, Danish, and North Frisian. The interesting thing about them is that they exist in a ratio less than a percent when compared to the expense of German language as the first language. Now, one is faced with an obvious question which is that if these languages exist in such low number then why are they recognised at all? History will answer these questions. In such areas, it is common to see important signals or signs in both the languages.

  • Sorbian language in Germany dates back to 5th and 6th century when Sorb Slavic’s ancestors settled in lower regions of East Germany. Although today’s version of Sorbian is very influenced by Germany and English, Germany has tried not only recognise but protect the language.
  • Romani language is a fascinating language. The reason being that unlike German or Sorbian it belongs to “Indo-Aryan family” of languages. It is said to be the only one of its kind which is spoken out of Indian subcontinent. It is like a product between an influx of two languages of Greek and Indian language. Romani people were the migratory group of people who settled in various parts of the world. Nevertheless, it is now an official first language in minority region in Germany.
  • This is a language spoken in the north of Germany. Danish is an official language of Denmark and also recognised by European council and this is why Danish is known more than the other languages mentioned in the minority language list. It also has a different dialect there but the main point is that it is still recognised in Germany to protect what is left of the valuable dialect in The Danish language as all the traditional ones have already vanished.
  • North Frisian languages are the closest to English and German being which are also very similar in lingual aspects. A small number of population, which is about 0.01% uses this language and needs protection the most. A book known as Red book of endangered language by UNESCO has classified this language as on the verge extinction as it has been totally abandoned and use of its terms have become completely redundant. Sadly people who already know this language also know two and one other language such a German to facilitate their daily routine.

This is not the end yet. These were just fun fact about the carefully preserved languages and respected languages in Germany. Apart from these there are more languages such ‘immigrant languages’ which are languages like Spanish, Dutch, Arabic, Greek, and even Turkish and Russian. In Germany, students are often taught French or Latin as their second language but one of the main debates that are discussed popularity is the acceptance of English language in the official platform. One thing which Germany that catches attention is how well they understand the importance of language and did not join the bandwagon of officiating English to bind their lingual diversity instead accepted as many they could.
